Chapter 1

When Your Go To New Levels You Will Face New Devils

We were all created by God to climb higher, run faster, and go farther by the power and purpose of God himself. Jeremiah even said that God’s plans were to prosper us and not to harm us and to give us hope and a bright future.

Climbing up into God’s presence is a matter of attitude not age, academic training, or some external circumstance that we have to find. I was inspired a few years back when former president George H. Bush went sky diving on his 80th birthday. Bush said, “I wanted to let the world know that life begins at 80!” That is great hope for a 65-year-old like me.  We are all called to be vertically inclined followers of Christ. That is believers who look to the mountains and set our minds on things above and not on things of this earth!  We should expect our mighty God to show himself strong on behalf of his children.  Especially if we want to get closer to God.  He knows that the closer we get to him the harder we must fight.

I remember the Sunday that I entered into the professional ministry as a licensed clergy.  I had taught Sunday School for a couple years in the church and had no problems with the people.  But after I was licensed the very next week a member of my Sunday School class didn’t like what I was teaching.  She went to the pastor and told him that I was teaching false doctrine. The pastor asked her what I had taught, and she said that I had said when Jesus died on the cross it was like God dying on a cross for our sins.

Since Jesus was totally 100 % God and at the same time, he was totally 100% man.   He became the only clean and pure sacrifice for our sins.  He was the perfect mediator between man and God.  The pastor then looked at her stunned and told her that I was right.  Which she did not agree with.   After this incident the pastor wisely took me aside and said, “brother Don you are now under attack.”

You see every time you advance in God’s kingdom, Satan retaliates toward you.  He does his best to try to get you to give up the ground that you had gained spiritually.  I’ve taken those words to heart and remembered them to this very day. That was over thirty years ago.  And that is the purpose for the next two chapters of this book.  To instruct you that the higher you climb in God eyes, and the closer you get to him, the more powerful devils you will have to face.  Look at this text from the Apostle Paul.  It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 32But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings:   Hebrews chapter 10:31 – 32.

The true enemy attack always comes after the illumination comes into your life.  This book of Hebrews was written to the Jews who were believers in Christ.  They were being taught that they had to go back to the old ways of Judaism.  You know all the animal sacrifices, and meaningless rituals they did under the Mosaic Law that don’t belong in the New Covenant.  Then Paul comes along and produced a conflict among them by telling them that their fight they were in was because of their illumination of the gospel.

Paul stressed that there was no going back after they had come this far.   Look at verse 26.  Did you ever wonder why it’s so hard to get someone back in church once they’ve been going there for a while? If they quit for whatever reason?  The reason it’s so hard to restore them is quite simple. It’s because He’s or (the Holy Spirit) is not working on them or convicting them anymore.  They have openly sinned without conscience, even denying the Holy Spirit’s power and he’s not convicting them anymore of their sins.

Now let’s look at the word “illumination.”  It’s the word “photimue” in the Greek. Which means to take a photograph of it.  A photograph is something that forms grooves on film when light hits it.

Scientists tell us that our mind is like one big constant photograph. They also tell us that our brain has grooves in it.  And when information comes into our mind. It takes a picture of the information and stores it in the grooves of our brain.  The more grooves you have in your brain the more knowledge you possess.  Now the enemy knows all about this.  So, once you get totally illuminated, or you gain a proper understanding of the gospel.  He then sets out to steal the information from you by turning on the affliction furnace in your life.  He figures that if he makes it hard on you in your everyday life, you will quit on God.  But I personally think this is a stupid tactic on his part.   Because the harder it gets for me the more, I run toward the strong tower of Jesus for protection.

Before I move on and talk about turning on the light in your life. I feel I have to mention something else first.  Do you know that most of the problems in our life are caused by us and not the devil?  We apply our human wisdom to everyday situations that arise in our life and miss God’s best for us.  It’s that human flesh nature that often gives us most of our problems.

In the book of Galatians chapter 5:19-21 it tells us of 17 different traps that we set for ourselves.  They are all called the works of the flesh.  And they are where most of our afflictions originate in our lives.

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries,

and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19 – 21

Paul also exhorted us that the only way to deal with the flesh was to follow Christ’s example that he set for us on Calvary that great and terrible day.  We must crucify it daily.  Paul said that he daily beat his body black and blue to be delivered from the body of death.

He knew that there was a snake still in the garden waiting to pounce on him through his flesh, if he allows him the opportunity to do so.  You see snakes eat common dust. Not for food, but to see with.  Natural snakes all have a sack in their mouth that circulates the dust collected by the tongue.  This informs the almost blind snake as to the size of its prey that it is facing. And that determines whether it will attack it for food or just make a show and leave.  And in the ‘spiritual” since man is made from the dust of the ground and the devil eats spiritual dust.   Common sense tell us that the more dust or flesh nature we stir up by our improper behavior.  The more he has to feed on in our life.  Thus, if you feed him a lot, he will be strong in your life.   But if you starve him out, he will be defeated against you.

Jesus once told his disciples the prince of this world is coming but he has nothing in me.  He was telling them that Satan-proof. You need to really understand that Satan did not crucify Jesus. His Father did. So, the first step to Satan-Proofing your life is to get control of your flesh.

                  Just Tell It NO!

Ephesians chapter 5 verse 8 says, for you were sometimes darkness, but now you are light in the world; so, walk as children of light.

If you want to Satan-proof your life.  You have to turn on the light and shine brightly in the dark world around us.  You must become a light reflector of Christ.  The best we can ever hope for is to be a light reflector.  So, in order to let our life, shine the light of Christ there are some things that we must do first.  We must turn on the light through everyday faithfulness.   Noah saved his whole family by being faithful to God for over hundred years and putting up with daily persecution and ridicule from the towns people. There are other things that turn on the light of God in our life like.

Holiness Turns On The Light- Joseph saved a whole nation and his entire family by staying pure before his God and turning on the light no matter what happened in his life and what situations he faced.

Prayer Turns On The Light- Moses is our shining example of a man who kept turning on the light.   Even when his loved ones seem to want to stay in darkness and sin. Did you know that God got so disgusted with Israel’s disobedience that he wanted to wipe them out and start over with Moses alone?   But Moses wouldn’t give up on Israel and stood in the gap with intercession and prayer to save them.

Our Obedience Also Turns On The Light.  Gideon kept the light shining during the difficult dark time of the book of judges.  It was also called a time when everyone did whatever they wanted to do. The bible says each man did what was right in their own eyes. That’s a scary thought. Even though he suffered from low self-esteem and had a low opinion of himself the angel said, “Gideon, you and God will rid the land of the Midianites, you mighty man of valor.”

Some faithful people even have to be the light bearers for their own marriage.  You see we are commanded by God to carry the light inside of us.  All throughout human history God has had men and women of God who have shinned the light of God to their lost generation.  Today those people are us.

Today we probably live in the darkest time in human history. It is the last of the last days and God even warned us that those days would be dark and fearful.  Believe it or not, today we have to vote on what is right and wrong.  We have had influential leaders of our country who have tried to redefine what the definition of a lie is.  We live in a big grey zone.  Absolute truths are not taught to our kids in the government run school system.  Instead, they are taught that they are their own boss and to look at life from the humanist’s point of view.

Young children are taught that they don’t have to be satisfied with what gender they were born to, but if they want the school system will help them change it without their parents’ consent. It’s okay. Oh, It is time to turn on the light brighter my friend.  Always remember friends the darker the room.  The brighter the light is. Even a very small light will shine and illuminate it.  If you want to Satan-proof your life you have to shine God’s light everywhere you go and in whatever you do.

Now look carefully at where God has placed you to shine your light!  Is it a dark workplace filled with sinners, debauchery, and sin?  Maybe you have a dark marriage right now and it seems like you can’t get along with your spouse. Do your best to shine bight. Or do you have a dark family life?

No matter where it is or how dark it is, just shine brightly my friend. That’s why the mission statement of the church I pastor is to “shine the life of Jesus and to lead others to become fully devoted followers of Christ.”  We are called to be God’s light in a very dark and dismal world. At this very dark time in human history, we must shine for nobody else can.  To get closer to God we must fight through Satan’s ranking order.  In the next chapter we will check out the ranking order and how to defeat them.
